Benidorm is a city in the province of Alicante in eastern Spain, on the Mediterranean coast, and belongs to the region of Marina Alta. The city became a famous tourist destination in 1925s, when the port was extended and the first hotels were built. Nowadays it is the fifth most populous town in the Alicante province with a population of 69,010 according to the 2014 census.
The Alicante airport is just 40 minutes driving through the AP7, and Valencia airport 1h and a half.
There you can find different population around the world, but there are more tourists from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The famous holiday package due to the night-life based around the central concentration of bars and clubs contributed to a high population. The large number of cabaret acts that start around 21:00 and continue into the early hours sets Benidorm in a city with a extended package of fun.
The best attraction of this lovely sunny place its marvellous beaches. Its five kilometres of coastline with secluded coves where holidaymakers can enjoy a refreshing swim, or at any one of the numerous water sports.
“Levante beach” is one of the most beautiful beaches in the city. The great location offers a whole range of services, with a busy seafront promenade which is dotted with pavement cafés and restaurants, and is also the best site for enjoying the nightlife.
“The Poniente beach” stretches for some three kilometres to the south of the town, and also offers a full range of services, as well as being accessible.
The historic place is located between the two main beaches, the Levante and Poniente. In the past it was a primitive fishing village overlooked by the church of San Jaime, with narrow streets and picturesque corners.
The city offers a wide range of services, and leisure options, including numerous hotels, and if you wants to spend a day in a Theme Park you must visit Terra Mítica.
The local gastronomy is known predominantly for its fish and rice. They are the most common dishes you must try. Paella is one of its most emblematic dishes, and casseroled or fried fish, or fish stew. “Ali-oli” is garlic and olive sauce always served with “Arros a Banda” which is a kind of “Paella instead meat with fish.
The region has several wines with the Alicante Designation of Origin label , including misteleta (sweet wine); it is also famous for its horchata (a milky drink made with nuts, and protected with the designation of origin label).
In Benidorm takes place different local markets; “The foietes market” is all Wednesday, here you will find all kind of fruits, vegetables and typical products of the region of La Marina Alta.
